HIPs - What's It All About?

Northampton has been chosen as one of six towns and cities to try out the Government’s controversial home information packs (HIPs).  Local solicitors and estate agents are preparing to assist the public whatever the outcome.  Jeff Creek, Partner and Head of DFA Law’s Property Department said, “We strive to take the stress out of the buying and selling of property and advise clients on all aspects of the process.  If anyone is in doubt they should seek legal advice.”

The trial, initially on a voluntary basis aims to smooth out any problems before full roll out across the country in summer 2007.  Much of the controversy has surrounded the concept of passing the expense of moving onto the seller prompting speculation that this would lead to a slump in the property market.  The Government has also announced that the home condition report, arguably the most useful part of a HIP will not be included as originally planned.

Home sellers in Bath, Cambridge, Huddersfield, Newcastle, Northampton and Southampton will be invited to use the packs from 6th November 2006. The Association of Home Information Pack Providers is confident that once people realise their worth there will be huge demand.
