Do I have to pay the National Minimum Wage to a self-employed groom?

I need someone to help me look my horses but I don’t want to employ anyone.  If I advertise the position as a self-employed groom can I pay them less than the national minimum wage?

Not necessarily.  The whole area of self- employed and employed workers is fraught with difficulty and there are many traps for the unwary.  Even if your groom signs a ‘Self-Employed contract’ it will not always rescue you if the true nature of the relationship is one of employment.  Just to add to the confusion some self-employed workers are entitled to be paid the national minimum wage so it’s best to get some advice before you start looking for a groom.
